The Art of People: When They Quit
One of the most difficult things that you can go through is somebody quitting you. Somebody breaking up with you; somebody walking out on you; somebody leaving your company or your church because of YOU. When somebody quits you, they leave a crater-sized hole in you – a hole of sorrow, a hole of, quite honestly, bruised ego. “I mean what’s wrong with me that such and such would just leave me. Fine, if she’s going to be that way, I’ll show her. I’ll show everybody.” And if you’re not careful, when somebody quits you, you will find yourself doing things that you’d never do otherwise so that you can feel whole and good and respected again.
In Numbers Chapter 3, Moses learns what it’s like to have somebody, actually, a lot of somebodies quit on you. In Verse 1, the Scripture says, “1 Getting on his high horse one day, Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, along with a few Reubenites - Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth - 2 rebelled against Moses. (Numbers 16:1-2 THE MESSAGE) They rebelled against Moses. They are about to quit Moses. Yeah, that Moses. The Red Sea Moses. This just goes to show that quitters quit even when you are doing the work of God. As a matter of fact, the very fact that you are doing the work of God is an accelerant to people quitting you. There are some people who cannot flow in your anointing. They cannot hang in the stratosphere of God that you are trying to get to. They can’t breathe comfortably at that level. They are too short sighted. They don’t have your vision. They are satisfied with things the way they were. And for all of those reasons, people are going to quit you even when – especially when – you are doing God’s work. Get used to it. It’s happened before. It will happen again. As a matter of fact, if it’s not happening, if everybody around you likes you, then you need to check yourself. Because their resistance to you is often an indicator of God’s presence with you.
