Leadership Rule No. 1: Fire Them ALL

3 Sundays ago, I fired every single volunteer at Renaissance Road Church.  Risky?  Yes.  Made me lose sleep just thinking about it?  Absolutely.

But here’s the thing.  Volunteers are more than volunteers.  They are people, and every one of them have passions, interests, and commitments now that they may not have had two years ago when they signed up to help out with teenagers on Thursday night.

Every one of them, because they are people, are called by God to do something for God in the Kingdom.  And here’s the thing that we miss:  callings change.  They shift.

So yeah, I fired everybody.  And then, we had a volunteer fair, and we hired people all over again.  Yes, a few people quit, but most people signed back up in the same or a new ministry.  As a matter of fact, we increased our volunteer base by probably 30 percent.

Why?  Because when you treat people like called people, then they’ll answer the call.

Fire them ALL, and you just watch God give you back more than you had in the first place.
